Unless you are Microsoft, there is a different set of considerations when it comes to creating logos for software companies.
While technology and software are interrelated, when it comes to the companies, they are separate and distinct.
The tech part is mostly seen while the software part works behind the scenes
.
Let’s take a look at the biggest tech companies in the world: Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook. They are known as the Big Four.
Now, let’s look at the top software companies. Microsoft, of course, is the number one software company. However, this company has already rooted itself in various computers that it could already compete with the Big Four.
Instead, let’s go down the list. Following Microsoft in the largest software companies are Oracle Corp., SAP SE, Salesforce.com, and Adobe Inc.
Everybody knows the Big Four’s logo. That’s mostly because they are products that you can see.
Amazon, for example, is the biggest e-commerce site in the world. People see the brand name and the logo when they shop online. They see it when they receive their delivery, too.
The same could be said with Apple. When people have Apple products, they see the Apple logo on the product.
Google and Facebook are online brands that people see often with the former being the largest online search engine and the latter being the most popular social media site.
Studying software companies logos
When you look at the Big Four, most of their logos can be simple icons. That would be with the exception of Amazon, which has the entire brand name as its logo, with the curved arrow running from A to Z.
The Apple company has an apple with a bite as logo while Google has the single G colored with blue, red, yellow, and green. Facebook has the lower-case f with a blue background as logo.
They can have these simple and sweet logos because they are already popular as a brand. People know them because they see these brands a lot.
It’s not the same with software companies. Software companies logos usually have to include its brand name.
Tech people know software companies, especially the top five we earlier mentioned. However, regular people don’t. Software is the more technical aspect of technology that only the tech-minded can access.
Even Microsoft used to have its whole name as logo. It has been through changes over the years. In fact, until now, it mostly uses the window icon plus the brand name as the logo.
Creativity
Even if you have to include the entire name of the brand, creativity should still be a large part of the creation of the logo.
The Microsoft logo is pretty iconic when you really study it. It looks like a window with four small panes. The four panes are colored with the following: red, green, yellow, and blue. Much like the Google color schemes, right?
It’s really quite creative as these colors represent Microsoft’s most-used and popular products:
● Red is for PowerPoint
● Green for Xbox
● Yellow for Bing
● Blue for Word
Every logo needs to be meaningful so that it becomes memorable to a lot of people. Even if people are not really for figuring out logos, if the logo truly represents the company, people will remember it.
Oracle logo
Oracle Corp. is an American computer technology company. Among the company’s products are cloud-engineered systems, database software and technology, and enterprise software.
The Oracle logo is a red oval that is horizontally laid. It’s called the Oracle loop. It is usually placed atop of the brand’s name.
So, what does it mean?
There are two components that are important to the logo—there is the color and the shape. Red is the color of aggression. That signifies Oracle’s aggression towards innovation. It wants to be the best software solution out there.
It also doesn’t escape the designer that red is a very attractive color. Of course, the company wants to attract as many clients as possible.
Now, the oval or anything circular provides a positive message. It makes sense that Oracle will use such a shape as its logo.
The name oracle is also predominantly red, which makes it easier to spot. That’s the first step to being recognizable.
Salesforce
This is an American software company that is cloud-based. When you see its logo, you will immediately understand the nature of its work.
The company provides a customer relationship management service. The goal of the company is to store records in clouds to get rid of the fire-prone paper.
The logo is the name salesforce, all in lowercase, inside a blue cloud. An apt logo, don’t you think? The “f” in the word is also italicized.
The color combination is also representative of what the company does since blue and white are the common colors of the clouds.
SAP SE logo
This is a German brand that develops enterprise software. It’s the largest non-American software company, if you think about it.
The SAP logo is also among the most recognizable in the software industry. Of course, only those involved with technology can actually recognize it.
The logo simply has the brand name in white with a blue background. Now, the background is the most interesting part of the logo. The right end if the blue background is cut diagonally.
It makes for an interesting and more dynamic design. It’s not basic, because the company desires more than just becoming a basic software organization. More than that, the brand is cutting-edge.
Now the logo makes sense, right?
By the way, the dash in the A is also curved in nature. The font is a custom typeface.
As for the use of the color blue, it was to indicate excellence and brightness. The company wants to showcase how bright its future is in the tech world.
Adobe
This may be familiar to a lot of people even if they don’t know what it actually does. This is a common software installed in computers and laptops.
Adobe is another American software company. It is mostly used in publication especially when graphics, photos, illustration, and videos are necessary.
The brand’s logo is a white stylized A in a red background. The brand has largely kept its original logo except in a louder manner since the background is bright red.
It’s obviously a minimalist design, which is consistent with the logos of the Adobe products like Photoshop, Pagemaker, and InDesign, among others.
